If you are on the hunt for a fun, active and engaging experience for your children this summer, look no further than Eleanor Pardee Park, where Kick For Charity is leading its unique soccer camps this summer. Kick for Charity, which was started by Gunn and Paly students in 2013, is a nonprofit, youth-led soccer camp that has raised thousands of dollars since it began in 2013.
Soccer camps at Pardee Park
This year Kick for Charity will run two, one-week sessions at Eleanor Pardee Park starting in June. The camp is ideal for kids ages 7-11 and no previous soccer experience is necessary.
All aspects of the camp, from registration, to designing tshirts, to running the activities with the kids, are managed by the high school students who started Kick for Charity and their friends.
Teens are eager to help as counselors
“Palo Alto is a strange place,” explains Ariya Momeny, one of Kick for Charity’s co-founders. “The media is always writing about how teenagers are drinking and doing drugs, but kids here are different. We have had tons of support from our friends, even though no one is getting paid.”
Kick for Charity puts fun first
With a goal of putting fun first, the Palo Alto high school youth who run Kick for Charity are less concerned with soccer drills than about making sure the kids are having a good time.
“Other camps are strict, but this is so relaxed,” said Avery, an eager camper. “I love all the choices, like we can play a scrimmage or game or just take a break if we are hot or tired.”
Added her friend Nicky, “The counselors go to high school so they are like kids too!” The boys were just as enthusiastic about Kick for Charity. Ten-year old Michael said, “This camp is not as focused on skills- it’s more about playing soccer games with your friends.”
All funds raised will support East Palo Alto kids
This year Kick for Charity will gives its proceeds to East Palo Alto Kids Foundation (EPAK). The fact that the camp is focused on making a difference is appealing for both parents who chose the camp and the kids who attend.
As counselor Alys Olmstead explained, “Palo Alto is a unique place- parents want their kids to know about how lucky they are to live here and find chances to give back to others.”
