Increase joy this holiday: Purge Before You Splurge

Do you love the holidays, but dread all the stuff that will fill your house in the coming weeks? This year, before you start cramming these new items into already crowded closets and dressers, Palo Alto Pulse has an idea: Purge Before You Splurge. That’s right, before you go shopping, take a moment to rid yourself of unwanted clothes and support a new local company called WOVIN. It’s quick, easy and you can schedule a free pickup online.

Purge Before You Splurge Campaign: Clean out your closets and do good at the same time

Palo Alto Pulse is teaming with WOVIN on the Purge Before You Splurge Palo Alto campaign, which aims to encourage Palo Alto residents to donate clothing (and shoes, textiles and more) between November 18-December 16th. We will be tracking the number of bags that WOVIN collects and posting the impact on social media. We’re going for a big number in Palo Alto!

Why WOVIN?

WOVIN  is a new Palo Alto company that is ‘disrupting’ the process of donating used clothing. While other clothing donation organizations often dump clothing in a bin and ship it by the pound to textile brokers, Wovin goes through all donated textiles by hand, looking to maximize the value of every item.

Donate your unwanted clothing by December 16th!

Wovin generates income for nonprofits from the items that can be resold and works with textile recycling companies to reclaim stuff that would otherwise be thrown away. WOVIN is launching a new blog called The Repurposed Life. Check it out to learn more about this cool company.

3 Simple Steps to Purge Before You Splurge

  1. Purge! Wovin accepts all clothing (in any condition except wet or moldy), including undergarments and socks, along with towels, sheets, and even shoes. Get rid of last year’s school backpacks, old sneakers and sports uniforms!!! Put items for Wovin in bags and label them, “Purge Before You Splurge.”
  2. Arrange for pickup (one click): Go to the WOVIN website and set a day for pick up. The Wovin driver will text you to let you know when he is coming and send you a receipt. All items donated through Wovin are 100% tax deductible.
  3. Share and receive love! Post a photo of your bags on Instagram with hashtag #purgebeforeyousplurge, tweet your photo to @papulse or share it with Palo Alto Pulse on our Facebook page. Everyone who posts a photo will receive a Palo Alto Pulse reusable “Chico” shopping bag, and donors who give 10 bags or more will be entered into a raffle for a $100 Patagonia gift certificate.

Declutter and  increase joy

If you’re a fan of Marie Kondo’s best-selling book on de-cluttering, you already know how good it feels to give away the items that no longer bring you, as Marie would say, “joy.” If not, here’s a quick guide to the lessons learned from her book.

Your donation will make a difference

Here’s a startling statistic: there is only one doctor for every 20,000 people in Uganda. That’s why we are excited that Purge Before You Splurge donations will support Samahope, an international nonprofit that funds doctors in the developing world to reach more patients.
